Do you know the difference between "Police" and "Secret Police"?

Opinion

The difference is simple. Police enforce laws, investigate crimes and apprehend perpetrators. Secret police enforce/protect a government/regime, and control or eliminate opposition. In some cases, legitimate police forces have functioned as secret police forces, as with the US Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI).

No, I am not accusing the FBI of being the equivalent of the Nazi Gestapo. However, they have been used by ideologues within some Administrations to help manipulate or, at least, trip up political opposition. It’s a taint on an otherwise proud tradition dating back to J. Edgar Hoover who maintained secret files on elected officials and prominent Americans, and used blackmail to “get his way” with them. Some argue that Hoover was doing what was best for the nation. Others argue that he was doing what was best for Hoover.
Does it really matter why J. Edgar used the FBI as his own personal secret police? No, of course not. Secret police activities are, by definition, extralegal, and those charged with enforcing the law must be held to a higher standard. Even if we agree with those activities, secret police activities cannot be condoned. Sadly, many are condoning them today as evidence emerges that the FBI has hidden or destroyed evidence to protect the Obama Administration and its key members including Hillary Clinton, or helped fabricate false evidence to impugn Donald Trump as candidate and President.

Obviously, many support any and all attacks on President Trump and his Administration because he is viewed as the Devil Incarnate. Whether because of his personal demeanor or his attacks on the beloved leaders of Leftist Progressivism, they are prepared to justify any action, legal or illegal, to destroy him and his agenda. Of course, what they fail to realize is that when you tear apart the fabric of the law in pursuit of the Devil, nothing will remain to protect them when the Devil turns on them.

Less Obviously, are the attacks on President Trump and his Administration sanctioned by the bureaucracy that he has promised to pare back. “Draining the Swamp” is correctly interpreted as a direct threat to their special status and perks.

Some now complain that newly appointed National Security Adviser John Bolton’s threats to “clean house” when he takes office on April 9, and remove holdovers from President Obama’s Administration, is over the top. However, it is clear that they are appointees, fiercely dedicated to the previous Administration, are a direct threat to President Trump and his agenda and it only makes good sense to purge them. Indeed, it is a wonder that they are still there or that they had any expectation of remaining there.

President Trump has disappointed many in many ways, especially by signing the recently passed omnibus budget legislation. They should be even more disappointed in his naivete, such as in not cleaning house before now.
We can expect that Bolton will begin with the offices in the West Wing first. However, those in other bureaus and agencies have reason to fear for their jobs, possibly even the FBI.
