Infantry School is a personal memoir of my first twelve months in the United States Army, from raw recruit to commissioned officer. It is an honest rendition of real life service while training for deployment to the war zone in Vietnam. The war was not yet unpopular when I raised my hand to volunteer on March 3, 1966, less than a year after I graduated from law school. We were dedicated to fighting the godless communists and keep them from invading a defenseless country that most of us had never heard of before. For some, especially the "city boys", Army life was a rude awakening. Others buckled under the discipline. Most were younger than me, and the training sergeants sometimes expected me to help babysit the "youngsters". It was, above all else, and for all of us, an adventure.
